Glucose Tolerance Testing: Activity 2.1.1: Diagnosing Diabetes
Glucose Tolerance Testing (GTT) is a testing of glucose present in the body and how the body regulates it. This test is commonly used when diagnosing diabetes. A patient will drink a solution with a high concentration of glucose and will have their blood taken every half hour to test the level of glucose in the blood. Normally, the blood-glucose levels won't rise very high above the set point and will return to normal levels after about 2-3 hours. This is an important skill to have because it helps determine whether a person has diabetes or not, which can help determine cause of death.

Insulin Tolerance Testing Activity 2.1.1: Diagnosing Diabetes
Insulin Tolerance Testing is another type of test that is commonly used for diagnosing diabetes. Insulin is a hormone produced by the body to help let glucose into the blood for energy purposes. Without insulin, our bodies cannot function properly because there is no glucose. This test helps diagnose which type of diabetes a person has. The blood is testing with an indicator that shows the amount of insulin present in the blood. If the levels of insulin stay the same, the patient doesn't have insulin and therefore has diabetes. This is a useful skill to have in biomedical careers because like the GTT it can help determine cause of death.

Food Testing (with chemical indicators) Activity 2.2.1 Food Testing
This skill includes the act of testing foods for different compounds that are commonly found in food. An indicator might change the color or temperature of a substance. It could also produce a precipitate or distinctive odor. The change is a chemical reaction between the substance and the indicator. In this activity, we tested for glucose, starch, protein, and lipids in three different foods. This skill is important to have because in order to perform these tests, reading the procedure is very important. Handling chemicals that can be harmful is important to experience for future labs.

Crime Scene Investigation Activity 1.1.2 Crime Scene Sketch
This skill includes drawing a detailed sketch of a crime scene. The importance of this skill is paying attention to certain details that should be included in the sketch which can be helpful throughout a whole investigation. These details can include accurate measurements and converting them to a scale that will be written on the sketch. Labeling and numbering major objects in the crime scene can be helpful as well. This can be important in a biomedical career because being able to draw things to scale and sketch a replica of a crime scene can lead to cause of death and other factors contributing to the crime committed.

HIPAA Activity 1.3.2: Student Response Sheet
This skill include being able to recognize when HIPAA rights are/aren't violated. For this activity, we carefully read over different scenarios paying attention whether or not HIPPA rights were violated. A simple explantation of HIPAA rights is that people cannot share specific information about a specific person to other people without the patients consent. This skill is helpful and important to have for a biomedical career because it can help determine if any rights were violated and if they could possibly lead to the solution of a crime.

Using/ Comprehending an Enterotube 5.1.5: Identification of Bacteria
The importance of being able to use this skill in lab is being able to identify specific bacteria. When we were figuring out Anna's bacteria, this test tested 12 different things. They were all metabolism tests to see whether they were positive or negative. Being able to use this test correctly is important to get accurate results. Being able to understand and comprehend the results of this test is important because then you can identify the correct bacteria. This test is commonly used in doctors offices for diagnosing infections.
