Lab Skills Acquired
Activity 4.1.2 Anatomy of the Heart (Dissection of a mammal heart)
During this lab, we dissected a sheep's heart. The heart pumps blood throughout the whole body and is one of the most important organs. It consists of two sides, left and right. There are 4 main chambers; the left/right atria and the left/right ventricles. Oxygenated and deoxygenated blood flows throughout. Once blood passes through the arteries to the lungs, oxygen is attracted to the hemoglobin and then eventually moves through the heart to the aorta where oxygenated blood is dispersed throughout the body. The importance of having the skill of dissecting in a lab is that its good to know what you're actually learning about. Being able to compare things like arteries and veins are important especially when learning their function. The structures are the main focus during dissection because size and shape are different compared to drawings.

Project 4.2.1: Heart Rate and Project 4.2.2 Blood Pressure (Using logger pro equipment)
Logger pro is a program that helps collect data and uses analysis for anything like heart rate, blood pressure, etc. Basically anything that one needs to collect data from can be used through this software. Using the proper equipment is important to be aware of. For this particular lab, we designed our own experiment to collect the subject's heart rate in different positions. To accomplish this, one must wear the heart monitoring device. Logger pro also has to be set up correctly in order for the collecting of data. Heart rate does change, according to the graphs, when body position changes. This is because the heart has to work a little harder when certain places are blocked off caused by a position like the fetal position, so the blood has to be pumped harder to reach the whole body. The skill of knowing how to use and read logger pro is important especially in a lab setting because a lot of data will be recorded with all experiments. Analyzing data is also important because that is the main focus of an experiment.

PBS Classroom Activities
Objective: Compare normal vs sickle-shaped red blood cells
Activity 3.1.1: Blood Detectives
My picture of my lab shows the different drawings of a normal red blood cell and a sickle shaped red blood cell. The shapes are very different. Sickle cells shown under a microscope appear more clumped because of their shape. At the beginning of the year I did not know that sickle cell red blood cells clump and why having this disease is such a problem. I also wasn't sure of the symptoms and complications of living with this disease. It's now easy to understand why these things happen since I know the difference between the healthy blood cell and the sickled red blood cell.

Objective: Model the inheritance of genetic diseases
Activity 3.3.1: How is DNA passed through generations?
This lab shows we picked different mothers and fathers and our children turned out a little different from other lab groups. Sickle cell disease is carried on the recessive trait/ allele. Best disease is carried on chromosome 11. Hemophilia is a recessive disorder carried on the X chromosome. Our lab showed that we know how to read the genotypes for determining a disease. I didn't know how these diseases were passed on but now I know and my memory was refreshed when we used punnett squares to find percentages of offspring with or without diseases.

Objective: Identify the main structures of the heart and describe their functions
Activity 4.1.2 Anatomy of the Heart
These are pictures of our dissections and our labels. Below the pictures of the actual dissection we explain the functions of these structures that we labeled. At the beginning of the year I had no idea about these different structures. I didn't know that there were certain valves in the heart that regulated direction of blood flow through the heart. I also did not know about the little parts like the chordae tendinae which help the the valves with staying closed and keep blood flow regular. I also didnt realize the different sizes of the chambers. Some have thicker walls because they work harder than other parts.

Self Reflection
I chose this career journal because this was the most appealing to me. It seems pretty interesting especially because they get paid so much. The range of their salaries is $39,870-$134,770. The tests that they perform daily dont seem that hard especially with the school that I need to take before getting this job. It would be cool and sort of fun to make a career out of this. We have done a mock gel electrophoresis which was pretty easy to understand and we'll be doing an actually trial of this, so that's a skill that can help. Typical lab work is also a skill. Social skills are important for dealing with patients. Reading over medical histories is also something that we've done in class before so that skill can help. After looking for jobs in Wisconsin, I found none.. But there are some in California.
